Security guards nab chicken suspect
A burglar was arrested on the roof of a chicken warehouse, and a large stash of stolen goods recovered, after a robbery in
Brook Meshesha, owner of Kebron Chicken Warehouse in Mdantsane, received a call from ADT Security around 11:30pm on Wednesday May 26 to tell him his shop alarm had gone off.
By the time he arrived at the shop soon afterwards, there were three ADT security guards at the premises. Meshesha entered the shop with ADT Armed Response Officer Khangelisa Mjekula to find cigarette boxes strewn on the floor and the till open and empty.
They found that the burglars had escaped into the ceiling, then on to the roof.
Meanwhile, the ADT control room had called the police, and four vans arrived. The police went on to the roof with Officer Mjekula, and found one burglar there, whom they arrested.
“The suspect told us there were three burglars altogether,” Officer Mjekula said. “The dog unit came, but it was not safe for the dogs to go on to the roof to look for the trail. “Later, the suspect showed the police where a large stash of cigarettes had been hidden and the cigarettes were found.”
Meshesha said stock worth R30 000, most of it cigarettes, had been stolen. “I really appreciate the work those security guards are doing. I’m very happy with their work – they’re very committed,” Meshesha said.
ADT Security Managing Director Eastern Cape Mike Byers said, “The actions of the guards show how rapid response to alarms and working with the police can protect property. Well done to all involved.”
