MEDIA RELEASE
MyCiTi shuttle service a success
June
15 2010
The
MyCiTi shuttle completed over 40 000 passenger trips between the Cape Town
Stadium Station and the Civic Centre Station by the end of the second 2010 FIFA
World Cup™ match on Monday night. “This is an important first step in creating
a public transport culture in Cape Town and a taste of world class public
transport,” says City Media Manager Kylie Hatton.
More
than 15 000 spectators used the MyCiTi stadium shuttle on their way to the
stadium last night (Monday) whereas 11 000 people utilised this service on
Friday. Just over 10 000 people caught the shuttle after yesterday’s match to
return to the MyCiTi Civic Centre Station. The increased numbers tested the
MyCiTi shuttle service further and the City is very satisfied with its
performance.
“The
service ran very smoothly on Monday night, with buses leaving every minute or two.
On Friday we had some teething problems with queuing of people and opening of
station and bus doors. However, many of these teething problems have been
resolved and the service operated more smoothly on Monday night.
“I
was on the bus on Friday night and I saw young people taking photographs of
themselves first in doorways, then sitting down – in fact, all over the bus. I
was delighted to experience their excitement with this slick new transport
service,” said Ms Hatton.
The
City encourages people travelling to the city centre to watch 2010 FIFA World
Cup™ games to use trains and buses, rather than private transport. To find out
more, log on to www.capetown.gov.za/2010 or phone the
Transport Information Centre’s toll-free helpline on 0800 65 64 63.
